Shoot Day - 04 & 05 - “Acting the part in Cambridge”

So we’re in Cambridge for the next 3 days, after having our plans change slightly I understand the need for a good producer, so when it comes to my third year films I need not have to worry about DOP-ing or producing my own work, and focus solely on directing the film as one should, and I think I have a few ideas on who is best suited to the role after this stunning week.

We’re shooting an interior house scene at the people who’ve put us up for a couple of days, and are also the actresses parents.

I’ve also learnt that a week away doing film can be a holiday or a nightmare, or both.
2 more days!!

Shoot Day - 03 “The Last Train in Loughborough”

So today was a first for me as a film-maker and hopefully not a last, we as a crew experienced our first ever shoot onboard a large moving vehicle, in this case a steam train which our Director had booked for the day from Loughborough through our primary location at Rothley towards Leicester station.

We only had a few hours to get the shots as we couldn’t possibly completely control the locomotive. We had a few compartments booked out for Klodian Daja and Party.

I shared Cam Op and Boom operator once again with Jack Monk who had to run errands, I got to get the money shot of the day of our actress on the train and then slip into the role of Boom Op and capture the sound of an engine roaring, it was great fun at the front of the train with Sound recordist Dean Batty.

The biggest lesson learned was how to get around issues like not having enough space to position the camera, and having to gaffer tape equipment to the walls and shelves. Basically thinking on your feet about getting the shot, light was an obvious issue also inside the train carriage and we managed to remarkably get the shots we needed in the given timeframe. All of that just for a few shots on a train, this project’s production value is rising by the day and we as a crew need to step up and act as professionally as the film intends to be.

Went to one of my locations today up in Widnes, can’t say I’m not proud. But it’s no Trey Ratcliff and never will be, with my documentary shoot date in less than 2 weeks I can’t help but think even though I started my path into HDR at Xmas 2011, that I needed so much more time (like 5 years) to get the most out of it.

Switched to RAW today, loving the results.

So I sat down with animator Jason Gelsthorpe http://thebigbadjdog.tumblr.com/ And we watched some raw roughly edited scenes from my 2011 summer film ‘Three Night’s Running’. This film stars Faraz Ahmed and Rasel Salik as two characters on a paranoid hunt for a stalker who is bothering Faraz’s character. The plot will not be clear from this so I added in commentary to explain the making of, because that’s what matters to me. So enjoy!

So yesterday I went on a location recce to my hometown Birmingham, this wasn’t for me but my fellow film-maker Jack Monk. I’m his Director Of Photography for his next film & really want it to have that visual kick, as there’s so much scope for composition in canal boats & so many locations to take advantage of. I also managed to bag a few recce shots for my own film, such as ‘The Cube’ Shopping centre.
